The small wedding was pulled together in just three weeks. The pandemic forced them to have an intimate wedding, so they recently renewed their vows with all of their family and friends in November 2021. Also in 2021, Honnold started a podcast about climbing. After graduating from Mira Loma High School as part of the International Baccalaureate Programme in 2003, he enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, to study civil engineering. His maternal grandfather died, his parents divorced during his first year of college, and Honnold skipped many of his classes to boulder by himself at Indian Rock. After about a year of climbing together, he won her over. She liked that he made her laugh, and their visions about the outdoors aligned.
Since the completion of “Free Solo,” Honnold and his girlfriend from the film, Sanni McCandless, got married and are expecting a child in February. Even so, McCandless has been open about how difficult it was to see her relationship depicted on screen — opening herself up to the judgment of viewers who criticized her personal decisions. Honnold surmises the release of “The Alpinist” may be even more challenging for Harrington. A romantic partnership is also central to both men’s stories.

Since 2005, there have been at least 13 deaths, 291 accidents and 140 search-and-rescue missions on Half Dome . Before 2010, up to 1,200 people per day attempted the climb. Last October, Honnold, who lives in Las Vegas, got the speed record on the classic Epinephrine, a 13-pitch 5.9 in Red Rock, in 34 minutes and 51 seconds. Asked if going through such vulnerable moments on camera ultimately strengthened their relationship, McCandless initially gave a forceful “no.” But Honnold said he disagreed. Sure, the documentary added stress, but he found it helpful to articulate his feelings in interviews in ways he might not otherwise. And on June 3, 2017, the day Honnold became the first person to solo El Capitan, McCandless wasn’t there.
He became the first person ever to climb El Capitan without ropes or safety gear. The life coach later moved in with Alex in his family van and home. Honnold then bought a house in Las Vegas where they spend time together.
He was a smart but socially awkward “dark soul” of a kid, unmotivated except for a love for going up things. He bought the family cabin, he says, because he wants it to remain the family cabin. Naturally, she doesn’t want to see Honnold fall (who does?), and yet, she’s partly responsible for two pre-climb injuries that create serious setbacks.
